We have always wanted to do the yearly Garden Tour in Kennebunkport where garden owners open the doors to their special secret gardens and let us all have a peak. There were many inspiring moments but we were really swept in by this cape porpoise rock garden designed to feel like a river passing through a mountain. So lovely!

Making Whoopie

Whoopie Pies

Hearty yet delicate, the whoopie pie is a sinful treat we here at Daytrip Society worship.

Inspired by a new cookbook by Sarah Billingsly and Amy Treadwell entitled, "Whoopie Pies", we made a special pilgrimage to a local institution, The Landing Store, who has been serving up this cream filled east coast classic for as long as we can remember.

For an exotic whoopie experience we recommend trying one of Sarah and Amy's recipes, like pistachio-cardamom, candied ginger, or lemon mascarpone!

Summer Dreamin'

We took advantage of our warm spring weather and readied our beach cruisers for some sunset rides around the ocean. Don't forget the picnic blanket!

Hoop House Inspiration

We were given a sneak peak of a neighbor's "hoop house" and couldn't believe our eyes. Bountiful greens of varieties we never knew existed all growing in arched cold frame allowing us homegrown backyard salads we could never imagine in a Maine garden this time of year. Dreamy. Thanks for the inspiration Lauren!

Maple Sunday

We are still thinking about the smell of maple syrup and those delicious maple donuts from "Maple Sunday" a few weeks back. This celebration of all things maple comes around every year on the fourth sunday in March. Sugar houses around Maine open their doors and show up how they make syrup and allow us to do some tasting too! After a long winter - it's the perfect time of year to get the family out on a fun daytrip.

Here at Daytrip Society we are truly inspired by our newest designer addition, Erin Flett, whose springy, cheerful designs evoke the sprouting flora and fauna of this new season. Ms. Flett, our Maine neighbor, employed her graphic sensibility to create a new line of pillows that are bold, yet sweet. We hope you are just as taken by them as we are.

The Little Island by Margaret Wise Brown

We couldn't help posting something about our favorite (and our child's favorite) children's book at the moment.

This is a beautifully written book by Margaret Wise Brown (author of the classic Goodnight Moon) illustrated by Leonard Weisgard. It is the story of the changing of seasons on a small island with only seven trees, seventeen bushes and one big rock. The reader is able to soak in the landscape of Maine with its gulls, lobsters, kingfishers, seals and even the wild strawberries that come in spring. One day a kitten comes to visit the island on a little sail boat and explores the island and its secret of how "all land is one land under the sea".

Margaret Wise Brown's writing is known for the wonderful rhythm that draw the reader into the environs she describes. She was one of the first to focus on quite moments and gentle observation about children's own lives and their environments instead of telling fairy tales or adventure stories more common at the time. This "here and now" philosophy was created and tested in an experimental school in New York City where Brown was able to communicate with the children about what they wanted to read.

Brown's home on the Island of Vinalhaven in Maine surely influenced the story of The Little island written with such love and care. We love this 1947 Caldecott award winner both for it's writing and illustrations but also for the way it reminds of us experiencing Maine from the perspective of a young child.

Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude '09

What a spectacular first week-end of Christmas Prelude this year! It was almost 50 degrees on Friday and not much cooler early Saturday then as if art directed - the snow started falling from the sky on Saturday night just as as it was getting dark enough for the tree lighting ceremony in the center of town. We are lucky to have the perfect view from our store front window of holiday tree in dock square tree adorned with buoys from local lobstering families. We awoke to a winter wonderland on Sunday morning with snow deeper than my boots and scurried in to town just in time for Santa's arrival by boat. Corny as it might sound, it's hard not to feel the spirit of the holiday this time of year in our little New England Town.

Does anyone remember "A Seal Called Andre" - the book about a Maine harbor seal who who spent his winters at the New England Aquarium in Boston and his summers in Rockport Harbor with a human family? We ran across a vintage copy and couldn't resist picking it up for the store. And the photos are so damn cute - we had to share...

We also located a vintage postcard from Maine featuring another Seal Pup with a young lobsterman offering him a bottle. Even Mainers can be softies!

Plastic Camera Maine Summer

There is nothing like a sunny, cloud filled, blue sky, summer day in Maine - especially when you have your Lomo Diana Camera in hand. I love to load up my favorite analog camera with film and hop in the canoe. Bright shimmery days are so perfect for plastic camera photography. Here are some shots on the way out to Vaughn's Island in Cape Porpoise. Thanks to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust for protecting this very special little island. - Jessica

Springtime has finally hit Maine! At least we think it has. We are ignoring the weather forecast of snow tonight and dreaming of chocolate bunnies and colored eggs. Karen was inspired by spring and our Cath Kidston stationery and collected farm fresh eggs from Gump's local chickens. She hand blew each egg and cut out the stationery to decoupage the cutest easter eggs ever! We love them so much they are in the front window. Thanks for spreading a little spring Karen!

Rock N Roll

The Daytrip Society staff finally made if out for a late winter daytrip! We had to check out the Backstage Pass: Rock & Roll Photography show at the Portland Museum of art what with our obsession on all things music & photo related. We highly recommend this great exhibit which is a much more intimate look at many of the artists we are used to seeing captured in big star moments. Great curation too. We are dying to know who the anonymous collector is who lent the museum this amazing grouping of photos!

Lucy is too cute with her Fred Flare heart shaped Sunglasses hanging from her shirt. Daytrip Society got in these glasses for a little winter pick me up. Hello Daytrippers!

We are excited to launch our blog - especially in the month of love.

What could be more romantic than stealing a kiss off the rocky Maine coast just near the lobster shack? This is the interior cover from Elisabeth Ogilvie's book, "Rowan Head".

We have started selling vintage Maine and nature related books at Daytrip Society. We couldn't resist posting the Elisabeth Ogilvie book covers on our new blog. She was drawn to Maine when she summered there as a child and then spent her adult life living on a remote island and writing about the beautiful rocky coast and its salty lobsterman. She says of the island in which she grew up; "To me, this little island, so far outside the others, and its life which I have lived both summer and winter, are an important though scarcely known part of the American scene. If ever I stop writing, I shall retire here and raise goats, sew, cook, sketch and read to my hearts content". That is exactly what she did but she kept writing as well. Cheers to Elisabeth Ogilvie and Maine winters!
